Updated June 2026 · 5 min read

The short version

Middletown is a lively college town in central Connecticut. Its music scene has three big draws. The Buttonwood Tree arts center. The beloved Eli Cannon's tap room. Wesleyan University's great concert programs. It's all wrapped around a walkable Main Street full of bars and restaurants.

Middletown sits on the Connecticut River. It's about halfway between Hartford and the shore. This small downtown packs in real arts energy. Here's where the music happens.

The Buttonwood Tree

It's the heart of Middletown's grassroots scene. The Buttonwood Tree Performing Arts Center sits at 605 Main Street, open since 1989. This all-ages space hosts live music, comedy, poetry, dance, and open mics. It's the kind of room where you find something new to love. For more spaces like it, see our best small venues guide.

Eli Cannon's & the Main Street scene

Eli Cannon's Tap Room is a Middletown institution. It's a bar with a huge beer list and regular live music. It anchors a walkable Main Street full of restaurants and bars. Many host bands and DJs, often with no cover. It's a downtown made for wandering and finding music.

Best for: a casual, no-cover night out.

Wesleyan University

Middletown is home to Wesleyan University. Its Center for the Arts runs a great year-round series. Think world music, jazz, contemporary classical, and dance. Much of it is open to the public. You won't find this kind of programming elsewhere in the region.
