The Sounding Board, West Hartford
The Sounding Board is a folk landmark. It is the oldest folk and acoustic series in CT. It has run non-stop since 1973 at the Universalist Church in West Hartford. Legends have played its stage. Think Pete Seeger, Odetta, Arlo Guthrie, Tom Paxton, and Doc Watson. It still books classic and new folk today.

The Sounding Board is not alone. Volunteers run folk nights all over the state. The Branford Folk Coffeehouse is run by the Branford Folk Music Society. It hosts a monthly series from September through May. Shows are at the First Congregational Church on the Branford green. Other church-basement series book great touring folk acts too. The rooms are tiny and quiet.
Best for: cozy, quiet folk nights with a local crowd.
Americana in the small halls
The best small halls book roots, bluegrass, and songwriter shows too. The Kate in Old Saybrook and Infinity Music Hall (Hartford and Norfolk) book them often. So do the Fairfield Theatre Company and the Side Door in Old Lyme. The Vanilla Bean Cafe in Pomfret is the Quiet Corner's folk hub. For the smallest rooms, see our best small venues guide.
Best for: touring roots acts and songwriters in rooms that sound great.
